Double Up Oklahoma, a program of Hunger Free Oklahoma, seeks current college and graduate students to complete field research in farmers markets and grocery stores across Oklahoma between June and August of 2024. This is a seasonal, summer intern position.

What is Double Up Oklahoma?

Double Up Oklahoma (DUO) is a nutrition incentive program that helps low-income families purchase more fresh produce at grocery stores and farmers markets. Double Up Oklahoma helps our neighbors afford more food, improves our community’s health, and builds our local economy.

What does an internship with Double Up Oklahoma look like?

This evaluation project is focused on meeting DUO participants where they shop. Students participating in the internship will spend 1-2 days per week traveling to farmers markets and grocery stores to conduct on-site evaluation. Evaluation will primarily be focused on surveying eligible customers. Key responsibilities include:

  1. Completing CITI certification (no cost to research student)
  2. Completing required survey administration training by Hunger Free Oklahoma and University of Oklahoma staff
  3. Administering intercept surveys to Double Up Oklahoma customers at participating farmers markets and grocery stores throughout Oklahoma
  4. Entry and maintenance of intercept survey data, including survey responses, from customers who opt for paper survey format
  5. Distributing and documenting farmers market gift cards and/or store gift cards to survey respondents as compensation for their time
  6. Completing weekly timesheets and monthly expense reports for mileage reimbursement.(Mileage expense will be reimbursed at the standard IRS rate.)

Who might be a good fit for this placement?
Students pursuing degrees in Public Health, Dietetics, Public Administration, or preparing for a job in the medical, nutrition, research, or nonprofit field will be a good fit for this project.

How long is the internship?
Internships for this project will be between six and eight weeks. Hunger Free Oklahoma will work with you to determine the best timeframe and schedule.

What are the requirements to participate in the internship?
An eligible applicant must:

  1. Have a valid driver’s license
  2. Have safe and reliable transportation and proof of insurance
  3. Have the ability to travel to farmers markets and grocery stores during their normal business hours
    • Some site visits must be conducted on Saturdays and Sundays, as these are days when many farmers markets operate
    • Markets and grocery stores are located throughout Oklahoma – in 25 counties. A smaller percentage of these locations will be assigned for visits.
  4. Be currently enrolled in an institution of higher education and pursuing an associate’s, bachelor’s, or advanced degree
